Celery Storage Tips

Love the crunchy texture, sweet taste, and gorgeous green color of Dandy® Celery? Our fresh-cut items are washed and ready to eat. After you're done snacking, simply put your leftover celery sticks back in the bag and pop them in the fridge. You can also maintain the quality, freshness, and beauty of our whole stalk and celery heart products. After you buy either, follow these seven simple steps.

1. Rinse it.

When you buy a bunch of celery or a celery heart that's wrapped in a plastic bag, it's important to rinse it before trimming and washing the stalks. Simply rinse the base under cold running water for 5 seconds rubbing off any visible dirt at the root base with your hands.

2. Cut it.

Use a sharp knife to cut off the bottom 1-2 inches of the bunch. Discard the root base.

3. Wash it.

The most efficient way to wash celery after cutting off the root base is to fill your kitchen sink with 4-5 inches of clean, cold water, pull the stalks apart, place them in the water, and use your fingers to rub the stalks to remove any dust or dirt adhering to them.

4. Dry it.

Use clean kitchen towels or paper towels to wipe excess moisture from the celery stalks before trimming them.

5. Trim it.

Celery is trimmed before packing, but the cut ends at the top can become discolored and dry. Trimming about ¼-inch off the top of each stalk removes the dried-out ends. You can use the trimmed ends for making vegetable broth, soups, stews, and other recipes that call for celery that is cooked.

If there are leaves on any of the stalks, trim them off and store them separately. Trimming off the leaves extends the shelf-life of the stalks. The leaves and tender, center stalks can be wrapped in damp paper towels, stored in a loosely closed ziptop bag, stored in the refrigerator, and then used in salads or for cooking dishes like soups, stews, and chilis.

6. Wrap it.

Wrap the celery leaves and separately wrap the stalks in a single layer of clean, damp paper towels and place in a zip-top storage bag, but don't close the bag the whole way. Allowing some air flow allows the celery to "breathe". (Yes, fresh produce like celery breathes or respires after harvest. There are packaging scientists who work to determine the perfect plastic permeability for packaging for celery sticks, celery hearts, lettuce blends, and more!)

The damp but not wet paper towels help keep the celery crisp. Simply place the paper towels under fresh running water, and then gently wring them out before wrapping the celery in them.

7. Store it.

Store your cleaned, wrapped celery and celery leaves in a produce crisper drawer or on a shelf in the middle of your refrigerator. The doors and top shelves of most refrigerators tend to have the greatest swings in temperature; maintaining a more constant temperature of approximately 33 to 40°F ensures longer shelf life for fresh celery. Colder temperatures, below freezing (32°F) can damage celery and change its color and texture. You can cook with celery that has frozen, but you likely won't want to eat it raw.

Sweet & Savory Stuffers

Celery is often seen as a crunchy sidekick to peanut butter or ranch dip and overlooked for its incredible versatility. From creamy, tangy fillings to sweet, indulgent treats, these stuffed celery stick ideas will inspire you to elevate your snacking and entertaining game to a whole new level. Welcome to the deliciously unexpected world of stuffed celery!

Celery S'Mores

Fill sticks with marshmallow cream, add crumbled graham crackers and drizzle with chocolate or chocolate sprinkles. We like to melt dark chocolate in a bowl and drizzle on for a thicker texture!

Chunky Peanut Butter and Chocolate Chips

We love the combo of chunky natural peanut butter and 70% dark cacao chips to give your body a nutritional boost.

Peanut Butter with Diced Fruit

Your "ants" don't have to be limited to dried fruit options. Keep it crisp and fresh by adding diced fresh fruit to your celery snacks, like diced green apples and peanut butter or almond butter and blueberries.

Greek Stuffed Celery

Greek yogurt is all the rage, and we can see why! Mix yogurt with feta cheese and add diced cucumber, tomatoes, olives and onions to make a savory Greek-style treat. We garnished our recipe with a sliver of pepperoncini.

Pear and Gorgonzola Celery Snacks

We love this as a healthy afternoon snack when you're in a pinch. Mix diced pear and chopped almonds with a little gorgonzola cheese for a fast snack that doesn't feel rushed.

Cheesy Ranch Celery Snacks

Who doesn't love ranch and celery? We took this classic and made it even better by mixing ranch seasoning with cream cheese, shredded cheddar and chopped pecans for a delicious celery pairing.

How to Juice Celery

Turn Crunch Time Into Go Time!

  1. Add celery to a juicer (or blender – just cut stalk into 1-inch pieces and strain the pulp with a cheese cloth!).
  2. Juice the celery and add your favorite fruits (apples, pears or blueberries) or vegetables (carrots) for added flavor and nutrition. Searching for pairing options? Keep reading below!
  3. Don't waste the pulp! Did you know that you could use it as a face mask or soup thickener? It's true!
